Cherry Smoothie - Holiday Detox

Cherry Smoothie - Holiday Detox
The word detox ignites an eye roll so big the threat of my eyes gettings stuck in the back of my head might actually happen. When holiday season of eating comes to a close, detoxing seems to be everyone’s solution to getting their body back to a normal rhythm of eating. The good news is you have a liver which has been ‘detoxing’ your body your entire life, so congratulations you may now skip the weird spicy water and subsequent trips to the bathroom. As much as I despise the idea of detoxing, I can definitely relate to the feeling of wanting a simple, nutritious, light meal to help my body feel nourished and energized again. This tart cherry smoothie is my go-to drink after a long stretch of eating my weight in cheese platters and cut-out cookies. As all the best artists do, this smoothie is named after it’s greatest track on the record: tart cherries! Tart cherries have slowly worked their way onto the same pedestal as turmeric, goji berries, and beet juice in the super food world. They have potent nutritional powers catering specifically to athletes. While they are high in iron, potassium, folate, fiber, and magnesium, their real claim to fame is the antioxidants called anthocyanins. These have been proven anti- inflammatory agents and fight oxidative damage in cells. All of this comes down to possibly reducing muscle fatigue, swellings, and minimizing aches and pains. All wins for an athlete!
