Can running cause skin problems?

JESSE: You may have started running just because you liked it, but over time you may have noticed you're looking pretty good and you notice other people out there running looking pretty good, they've got those suntans, nice golden skin, except there's this kind of irritation and now you're itchy a little bit and now you've got acne. Well, on today's episode of Runner's High we're going to talk about all of the skin problems that running can cause.

So it's kind of the elephant in the room, right? These irritating little skin conditions we get from running that we don't really want to talk about. We get all these acnes, bacne, acne on your butt, I saw that recently, somebody asking about that.

All of these things are a lot more common than you think they are, and you are not alone. Plus, this is kind of what I do, it’s what Solpri is about. I'm not just wearing this orange shirt because I like to look good in orange, it's because I want you to know that we have things that can help you as an athlete, as a runner, still actually have good skin.

So really, really common is getting acne from running, and this comes from a couple of different things. One is you know, potentially, just poor hygiene. And I don't mean that you're a slob and you just never shower.

The thing is that if you don't shower immediately or change out of those sweaty clothes immediately, then there's a possibility that sweat is going to get trapped in your pores along with skin, dirt, debris, all those kinds of things, and end up causing acne, bacne, butt acne, and we need a word for that, buttne? That's not right. You tell me, leave me in the comments below what should we call butt acne?

In any case, all of these combinations of things cause problems that can lead to acne. If you wear makeup, please don't wear makeup for running, take it off. But that is another source of potential irritation for your skin that can be prevented. It's simply a matter of, in this case, having good hygiene, changing out of those clothes, showering pretty much right away after you get done running, and then you can prevent a lot of those things down the line.

Do you have a long-term skin problem that you may not think about? Even I have a hard time sometimes reminding myself, but you have to make a habit of it, is that long-term exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer. Not to scare you, but it does cause skin damage, to cause skin cancer, so we want to wear some kind of sunscreen.

Now, we don't have a sunscreen at the moment, maybe by the time you're watching this video we do, but it's a little bit more involved in the process to make a unique sunscreen. So, the FDA is involved and all of these kinds of things, more regular regulatory hurdles.

[03:06 In any case, you want to try and go for a low or non-comedogenic sunscreen. Those fancy words are really just a way of saying non-pore clogging. It's much like our anti inaudible, which is another skin problem you can run into, it doesn't clog pores. When you clog pores, that leads to acne, and then here we are back at the beginning, you've been having good hygiene, and then you still end up with acne.

So all of these things you do to take care of your skin, both in the immediate right now and into the future so that you both look good from running and feel good because your skin is not itchy, it's not irritated, you don't have postules, which is what acne is. That's an annoying word, isn't it? Postules. You don't have annoying acne all over your skin.
