Jesse: [00:00:00] Running while pregnant. This is a topic I’ve actually avoided for a very long time because I’m a guy I’ll never be pregnant. Thus I can’t run while pregnant. But my wife is pregnant right now, so it’s something that’s been on my mind. And I want to talk to you about it today.
Jesse: [00:00:26] I’m Jesse Funk. This is a show I call Runner’s High where we talk about everything running, including today’s topic, running while pregnant. Now, before you get mad at me, first subscribe, if you’d like to be entertained and you like running.
Jesse: [00:00:40] But before you get mad at me I think I’m going to mansplain this situation to you, I absolutely am not. Which is why I’ve avoided this topic for a very long time, because I’m a fan of both having the knowledge about something, but also having lived the experience. And since I can’t do that, I can give you general guidelines like “Don’t start running if you haven’t been running before you’re pregnant”, “Running is generally fine”, all of those kinds of things, things that your doctor, your OB will probably tell you.
Jesse: [00:01:10] But there’s another show I do here on this channel called the Smart Athlete Podcast, and I had the opportunity to ask the absolutely perfect person about this, the founder of The Mother Runner, Whitney Heins. She was on the show. Show comes out on Fridays if you’re interested in meeting really awesome people. But here in a second, we’re going to switch over to that clip where I ask Whitney about it and let her explain both her experience and her guidelines on running while pregnant.
Whitney: [00:01:41] I think I mean, it’s kind of similar to whether or not you are pregnant. It’s just to stay in your own lane and do do what works best for you. But it can be dangerous if you’re pregnant or postpartum when you’re looking at what other people are doing and having that influence what’s best for you.
I mean, running in particular in such an individual sport and every pregnancy is different, whether how you feel, how you run, if you’re not running, how you look, it’s — I mean, your number one goal is keeping you and your baby healthy. So you do not want to be cutting calories because you don’t have the basketball belly that so and so on Instagram does. I mean, that’s that’s dangerous.
[00:02:27] So I that’s I think there is the message that every pregnancy is different is really getting out there and people are realizing that. But still, if you are following somebody on Instagram and they’re proud or bragging of about how much they’re running and how great they feel in their pregnancy or postpartum. A lot of people get out there and they’re like six weeks postpartum or like I just ran a half marathon that just unfollow them.
Jesse: [00:03:01] So that’s it. Relatively short and sweet. Knowing that everything’s different is kind of the topic of this channel, right? Figuring out how to address your personal needs is what we do here or what I do here regarding running and when I can’t answer a question like this one, that Whitney was lovely enough to step in and help me with.
